چکیده

Motivated by its success in decoding turbo codes, we provide an analysis of the belief propagation algorithm on the turbo decoding graph with Gaussian densities. In this context, we are able to show that, under certain conditions, the algorithm converges and that – somewhat surprisingly – though the density generated by belief propagation may differ significantly from the desired posterior density, the means of these two densities coincide. Since computation of posterior distributions is tractable when densities are Gaussian, use of belief propagation in such a setting may appear unwarranted. Indeed, our primary motivation for studying belief propagation in this context stems from a desire to enhance our understanding of the algorithm’s dynamics in non-Gaussian setting, and to gain insights into its excellent performance in turbo codes. Nevertheless, even when the densities are Gaussian, belief propagation may sometimes provide a more efficient alternative to traditional inference methods.

Efficient Decoding of Turbo Codes with Nonbinary Belief Propagation

This paper presents a new approach to decode turbo codes using a nonbinary belief propagation decoder. The proposed approach can be decomposed into two main steps. First, a nonbinary Tanner graph representation of the turbo code is derived by clustering the binary parity-check matrix of the turbo code. Then, a group belief propagation decoder runs several iterations on the obtained nonbinary Ta...

Correctness of Belief Propagation in Gaussian Graphical Models of Arbitrary Topology

Graphical models, such as Bayesian networks and Markov random fields, represent statistical dependencies of variables by a graph. Local "belief propagation" rules of the sort proposed by Pearl (1988) are guaranteed to converge to the correct posterior probabilities in singly connected graphs. Recently, good performance has been obtained by using these same rules on graphs with loops, a method w...

Information Geometrical Framework for Analyzing Belief Propagation Decoder

The mystery of belief propagation (BP) decoder, especially of the turbo decoding, is studied from information geometrical viewpoint. The loopy belief network (BN) of turbo codes makes it difficult to obtain the true “belief” by BP, and the characteristics of the algorithm and its equilibrium are not clearly understood. Our study gives an intuitive understanding of the mechanism, and a new frame...

An Analysis of Turbo Decoding with Gaussian Densities

We provide an analysis of the turbo decoding algorithm (TDA) in a setting involving Gaussian densities. In this context, we are able to show that the algorithm converges and that somewhat surprisingly though the density generated by the TDA may differ significantly from the desired posterior density, the means of these two densities coincide.
